Migrate from TrainController

What the importer reads out of your .yrrg file, and what you answer before a layout is created.

Reads .yrrg and .yrl up to 50 MB
Every decoded object shown before anything is created
Your TrainController installation is untouched

Still deciding? Read the TrainController alternative comparison first: it covers RailScanPro, TrainController, JMRI, iTrain and LocoLink, and it says who should stay where they are.

We Understand Your Frustration

Can you no longer buy TrainController in the USA?

TrainController sales in the USA ended on 30 June 2026, so a new licence, an extra module or a version upgrade is no longer something you can buy.

Years of work in a .yrrg file?

Your track plan, your switchboards and your roster are all in that file. This page is about reading it into RailScanPro rather than drawing the railroad again.

Want the railroad on more than one machine?

RailScanPro runs in any modern browser, and RailCommand Desktop ships for Windows, macOS on Apple Silicon and Linux.

We're Here to Help

How Migration Works

Three simple steps to migrate your entire roster

1

Upload Your File

Choose your .yrrg file. We read the roster out of it and show you what is in there.

2

Review Your Data

We extract locomotives, cars, layouts, and maintenance history. Review before importing.

3

Start Operating

The import creates your layout and roster in your account, with anything it could not decide flagged for you rather than guessed.

What Gets Imported

All locomotives (road name, number, DCC address)
Freight and passenger cars
Maintenance history
Decoder configurations
Track layouts (Phase 2)
Routes and macros (Phase 2)

Read Your Roster From Your .yrrg File

Read your roster straight out of the file. No account, nothing stored.

Choose your .yrrg file

No account required. Files up to 5 MB. We read the file to count what is in it and do not store it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my data be safe during migration?

Absolutely. We use bank-level encryption for all data transfers and storage. Your original .yrrg files remain untouched, and we create a complete backup before any migration. You can export your data at any time.

Can I still use TrainController alongside RailScanPro?

Yes! Many users run both systems during their transition period. RailScanPro doesn't interfere with TrainController installations. We recommend taking time to explore RailScanPro while keeping your existing setup running.

What if I have questions during migration?

Write to support@railscanpro.com and we will answer. The importer also shows you every object it decoded before anything is created, so most questions are answered on the review screen itself.

How much does RailScanPro cost?

Plans start at $19 a month for Hobbyist, with a 30 day free trial and no long-term contract. Family is $29, Pro is $49, Club is $129 and Museum is $349 a month, and every feature is unlocked on every plan.

Do you support my DCC system?

We support all major DCC systems including Digitrax (LocoNet), NCE, ESU, DCC++, and DCC-EX. We also integrate with JMRI for maximum compatibility. If you have a specific system, contact us to confirm support.

What about layout control and automation?

Layout control and automation features are currently in development based on community feedback. We're building modern, cloud-based equivalents to TrainController's automation features. Join our beta program to influence the roadmap.

I am not in the USA. Can I still use RailScanPro?

Yes. RailScanPro is built for hobbyists, clubs and museums across the globe, and the web app runs in any modern browser.

Ready to Make the Switch?

Upload your .yrrg file, read what the decoder found in it, and decide from there. Your TrainController installation is untouched either way.

Import runs on the web. Nothing is written to your account until you press Create layout.
