Full Story
On December 20, 1910, the Ceylon Government Railway (CGR) inaugurated the Dimbula–Nawalapitiya extension, an important link in developing the island’s upcountry mainline. The line traversed steep gradients and lush highland terrain, enabling transport of tea—the colony’s most valuable export—from estates in the central mountains to Colombo’s port. British engineers employed advanced earthworks and small-radius curves suitable for narrow-gauge-style alignment despite the broad-gauge standard. The opening strengthened commercial links to plantation districts such as Hatton and Talawakele and accelerated economic development across the highlands. The route remains part of Sri Lanka’s scenic and heavily traveled Main Line today, known for its dramatic views and popularity among rail enthusiasts.
