May 18, 1903

Summary

The Simplon Tunnel under the Alps achieves breakthrough, becoming the world's longest railway tunnel at the time.

Full Story

On May 18, 1903, workers completed the breakthrough of the Simplon Tunnel linking Switzerland and Italy through the Alps. Spanning 19.8 kilometers, it was an engineering marvel designed by Swiss engineer Alfred Brandt and constructed by a joint Swiss-Italian team using innovative ventilation and hydraulic drills to combat extreme heat and water ingress. The tunnel facilitated efficient north-south freight and passenger traffic, reducing travel times dramatically and strengthening economic ties across Europe. It opened fully in 1906 after electrification. This project highlighted international cooperation in rail infrastructure and set standards for alpine tunneling techniques still studied by model railroaders recreating mountainous layouts today.
