Summary

Breakthrough achieved in the Simplon Tunnel, one of Europe's longest rail tunnels at the time.

Full Story

On May 20, 1903, workers achieved a major breakthrough in the Simplon Tunnel between Switzerland and Italy, a 19.8 km engineering marvel that would become the world's longest rail tunnel upon completion in 1906. Designed by Swiss engineer Alfred Brandt, the project used innovative ventilation and cooling systems to combat extreme heat and water ingress deep in the Alps. The tunnel connected the Jura-Simplon Railway with Italian lines, dramatically shortening travel times between northern Europe and the Mediterranean. It symbolized international cooperation in rail development and boosted trade, tourism, and military logistics. The engineering lessons from Simplon influenced later Alpine projects like the Gotthard Base Tunnel.
