On May 25, 1950, the first commercial Talgo train entered service between Madrid and Hendaye on the Spanish-French border. Developed by Alejandro Goicoechea and sponsored by the Patentes Talgo company, these lightweight articulated coaches with independent wheels dramatically improved speed and stability on Iberian broad gauge. The trains reduced journey times significantly and influenced high-speed rail concepts worldwide. Their success helped modernize RENFE after the Spanish Civil War and led to multiple generations of Talgo technology still used today.
