On May 25, 1900, the section from Samara to Chelyabinsk on the Trans-Siberian Railway was formally opened, marking a critical step in Russia's vast east-west rail network. Engineered under the direction of Sergei Witte, the line used 5-foot gauge track and faced extreme challenges including permafrost and river crossings. This development accelerated colonization of Siberia, facilitated resource transport, and strengthened imperial control. The railway later carried troops during the Russo-Japanese War and remains one of the longest rail routes in the world.
