On May 29, 1901, Kyoto launched its electric streetcar network, following Tokyo's pioneering effort. Built by the Kyoto Electric Railway Company with equipment imported from the United States, the system featured double-truck cars capable of navigating narrow historic streets. This innovation replaced slower horse-drawn trams and helped preserve Kyoto's cultural sites by reducing congestion. The project overcame significant engineering hurdles, including adapting Western technology to Japan's narrower gauge preferences, and set standards for subsequent electrification across Japanese cities during the Meiji era modernization drive.
