On July 4, 1883, the Northern Pacific Railway drove the final spike near Gold Creek, Montana, completing the second U.S. transcontinental railroad. Financed by Henry Villard and engineered through the challenging Rocky Mountains and Cascade Range, the line connected St. Paul, Minnesota, to Tacoma, Washington. Celebrations included a special train carrying dignitaries and a grand ceremony at the driving of the last spike. The route opened vast wheat and timber lands to settlement, spurred the growth of cities such as Billings and Spokane, and introduced innovative dining and sleeping cars that set standards for long-distance passenger travel.
