The Pontchartrain Railroad completed its five-mile line from New Orleans to Milneburg on Lake Pontchartrain on July 4, 1840, becoming Louisiana's earliest operational steam railroad. Powered by early American-built locomotives, the route facilitated passenger excursions and freight movement of cotton and goods, bypassing slow river transport. It featured one of the first railroad wharves and sparked suburban development along the lakefront. This short but vital line demonstrated rail's superiority for regional commerce and influenced later Gulf Coast networks.
