On July 8, 1928, the initial 2.2 km section of the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line opened between Umeda and Shinsaibashi, using 1,435 mm standard gauge and third-rail power. Designed to relieve streetcar congestion in Japan's second-largest city, the line featured steel cars built by Nippon Sharyo. Its success spurred further subway construction across Japan and demonstrated how underground rail could transform dense urban mobility in Asia.
