July 9, 1901 saw the ceremonial opening of the Irkutsk to Baikal section of the Trans-Siberian Railway. This engineering marvel crossed Lake Baikal via a specially designed ice-breaking train ferry before the permanent Circum-Baikal line. Tsar Nicholas II's administration pushed the project to connect European Russia with the Pacific, using 4-6-0 steam locomotives. It facilitated troop movements during the Russo-Japanese War and spurred Siberian settlement, remaining one of the world's longest rail routes with profound geopolitical impact.
