First Steam Train in Canada

Champlain and St. Lawrence Railroad

La Prairie, Quebec

August 21, 1832

Summary

The Champlain and St. Lawrence Railroad operated Canada's first steam locomotive on August 21, 1832.

Full Story

On August 21, 1832, the Champlain and St. Lawrence Railroad inaugurated service with the steam locomotive Dorchester, marking the first use of steam power in Canada. Built by Robert Stephenson in England, the 0-4-0 locomotive hauled passengers and freight between La Prairie and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec. This 16-mile line was constructed to bypass rapids on the Richelieu River and connect Montreal to New York markets via Lake Champlain. Engineering challenges included wooden rails sheathed in iron and the locomotive's weight, which required frequent track repairs. The event symbolized Canada's entry into the railway age, spurring economic growth in agriculture and trade. It influenced later expansions like the Grand Trunk Railway and demonstrated the viability of steam over horse-drawn cars. Lasting impact includes preservation of Dorchester's replica at the Canada Science and Technology Museum, inspiring model railroaders with early Canadian railroading themes.
