On the morning of February 9, 2016, tragedy struck the idyllic town of Bad Aibling in Bavaria, Germany, when two passenger trains collided head-on on a single-track stretch of railway. The accident occurred on the Meridian line, operated by Bayerische Oberlandbahn (BOB), a private regional railway company. The collision resulted in the deaths of 12 people and injuries to 85 others, making it one of the most severe rail accidents in Germany in recent decades.
The trains involved were modern Stadler FLIRT (Fast Light Innovative Regional Train) units, known for their state-of-the-art safety features and energy efficiency. At the time of the crash, both trains were traveling at high speeds, leaving little time for either to slow down or avoid impact. The crash occurred near a sharp curve in the track, which limited visibility and exacerbated the severity of the accident.
