On February 18, 2004, one of the deadliest rail disasters in modern history unfolded near Nishapur, Iran, when a runaway freight train carrying hazardous materials derailed and exploded. The train, which had been left unattended on a siding near the station in Khayyam, began to move downhill uncontrolled, gaining momentum before derailing on a slope. Its cargo included highly flammable and reactive materials such as sulfur, gasoline, and fertilizer, creating a volatile mix that would lead to catastrophic consequences.
The derailment caused an initial fire, which prompted local authorities and rescue workers to respond. Tragically, as firefighters, police officers, and other emergency personnel worked to contain the fire, the chemicals aboard the train reacted explosively. The blast was so powerful that it registered as a 3.6 magnitude earthquake, flattened five nearby villages, and created a crater several meters deep. Witnesses described the explosion as a massive fireball that turned the night sky orange and could be seen from miles away.
In total, up to 295 people were killed, including 182 rescue workers who had rushed to the scene in an effort to save lives. Hundreds more were injured, and the devastation to the surrounding area was immense, with homes, infrastructure, and farmland destroyed. The disaster highlighted the risks associated with transporting hazardous materials by rail, particularly in regions where safety protocols and infrastructure maintenance may not align with the dangers posed by such cargo.
The Nishapur train disaster served as a grim reminder of the importance of strict safety measures in the rail industry, particularly when handling dangerous goods.
