On March 14, 1945, in the final months of World War II, the Royal Air Force (R.A.F.) deployed the Grand Slam bomb, the largest conventional bomb of its time, for the first time in combat. The target was the Schildesche railway viaduct near Bielefeld, Germany, a critical link in the German rail network that supported Nazi troop movements and supply lines. The viaduct, a massive structure of steel and concrete, was a key piece of infrastructure vital to the German war effort.
The Grand Slam, designed by British engineer Barnes Wallis, was a 22,000-pound 'earthquake bomb' capable of penetrating deeply into the ground before detonating. Its purpose was to generate shockwaves powerful enough to destroy fortifications and infrastructure by undermining their foundations. This marked a significant advancement in aerial bombardment technology. Delivered by an Avro Lancaster bomber of the No. 617 Squadron, famously known as the 'Dambusters,' the Grand Slam struck the viaduct with devastating effect.
