Tokyo-Yokohama Electric Line Opens

On May 30, 1908, the Tokyo-Yokohama Electric Railway opened its initial section, introducing widespread electric traction to Japanese commuter service. This line addressed urban growth around Tokyo and Yokohama ports by replacing steam with cleaner, more efficient electric multiple units. Engineers overcame challenges of integrating overhead catenary with existing infrastructure. The project reflected Japan's rapid industrialization and adoption of Western technology.
