First Train to Promontory Summit

On May 29, 1869, just days after the official Golden Spike ceremony, regular train service began across the newly completed First Transcontinental Railroad. Central Pacific's Jupiter and Union Pacific's No. 119 locomotives met at Promontory Summit, Utah Territory, symbolizing the connection of the eastern and western United States. This engineering marvel overcame immense challenges including the Sierra Nevada mountains and harsh desert conditions, using thousands of Chinese and Irish laborers.
