York and North Midland Railway Extension

On May 30, 1844, the York and North Midland Railway completed its 42-mile extension from York to the seaside resort of Scarborough. Engineered by George Hudson, known as the Railway King, the line featured gentle gradients suitable for early locomotives like the 2-2-2 Patentee types. This development connected inland industrial centers with the North Sea coast, spurring economic growth through passenger excursions and fish transport. It exemplified the rapid expansion of Britain's railway network during the Railway Mania period and influenced later seaside resort development across Europe.
