Leadville arrives on the Denver & Rio Grande

On June 1, 1880, the Denver & Rio Grande Railway extended its famous three-foot narrow-gauge line from Buena Vista to Leadville, conquering the 10,000-foot Tennessee Pass with switchbacks and trestles. General William Jackson Palmer's company used 2-8-0 Consolidation locomotives to haul silver ore and passengers through the Rockies. The arrival triggered explosive growth in Leadville, then America's richest silver district, and demonstrated the economic viability of narrow-gauge technology in mountainous terrain. The line later became part of the Royal Gorge Route and remains a heritage corridor today.
