Southern Railroads Complete Gauge Standardization

Following the Civil War, southern railroads operated on a 5-foot gauge that isolated them from northern lines. On June 1-3 1886, thousands of workers simultaneously adjusted track and rolling stock across thousands of miles, enabling seamless interchange with the rest of the continent. This massive coordinated effort dramatically boosted interstate commerce and set the stage for the modern U.S. rail network.
