Northern Pacific Railway Completion

On June 4, 1883, the Northern Pacific Railway celebrated the driving of its last spike near Gold Creek, Montana, marking the completion of the second transcontinental railroad in the United States. Led by financier Henry Villard, the line stretched from Minnesota to Washington Territory and opened vast western lands to settlement and commerce. The event featured dignitaries and a golden spike ceremony, though the official golden spike was actually driven later in September. The railway introduced innovative features like dining cars and helped spur economic growth in the northern tier states while competing directly with the Union Pacific.
