June 7, 1893 marked the debut of electric traction Down Under when the Box Hill and Doncaster Tramway Company launched service in Melbourne's suburbs using overhead wire technology imported from the United States. Engineer W.C. Kernot oversaw the project, which featured four motorized cars built locally.
