Opening of York and North Midland Railway extension

On June 6, 1848, the York and North Midland Railway completed its extension to Hull, integrating the important port city into the growing British rail network. This line featured innovative engineering to cross the River Ouse and allowed faster transport of goods and passengers between industrial Yorkshire and maritime trade routes.
