First electric streetcar line in Japan

On June 7, 1893, the Kyoto Electric Railway began operations on a 3.5 km line between Shijō and Fushimi using imported American equipment. This marked the first electric traction railway in Japan, replacing slower horse-drawn trams. The innovation came amid rapid Meiji-era modernization and helped ease congestion in Kyoto's historic streets. It paved the way for nationwide electrification of urban lines and influenced later subway and interurban developments, demonstrating how rail technology could blend with traditional cityscapes.
