GWR extension to Bristol opens

On June 7, 1842, Isambard Kingdom Brunel's Great Western Railway opened its extension from Bath to Bristol Temple Meads station. This completed the 118-mile route from London Paddington using the innovative 7-foot broad gauge. The project overcame major engineering feats including the 1.8-mile Box Tunnel. The opening dramatically reduced travel times between the capital and western ports, accelerating industrial trade, passenger growth, and regional economic integration during the height of Britain's railway mania. It established engineering benchmarks still studied by modelers and historians today.
