First Electric Streetcar in Japan

On June 9, 1891, the Kyoto Electric Railway launched Japan's inaugural electric streetcar line between Kyoto Station and Fushimi, utilizing overhead trolley wires and early DC-powered cars. This innovation, inspired by American and European systems, overcame urban congestion challenges in a rapidly modernizing nation. Engineer Ichisuke Fujioka played a key role in adapting the technology. The service transformed urban mobility, reduced reliance on horse-drawn transport, and paved the way for extensive electrification across Japanese cities, influencing the nation's dense rail network today.
