Berlin S-Bahn Electrification Begins

On June 8, 1928, the Berlin S-Bahn initiated major electrification efforts using 750V DC third rail, converting steam-operated suburban lines into a high-frequency rapid transit system. This project, managed by the Deutsche Reichsbahn, addressed growing commuter demands in the Weimar Republic era and featured purpose-built ET 165 electric multiple units. It overcame challenges of integrating with existing infrastructure while providing reliable service across 300+ kilometers of track. The modernization influenced European suburban rail design and supported Berlin's economic recovery, later becoming a symbol of divided city connectivity during the Cold War.
