First Canadian Steam Railway Opens

On June 10, 1837, the Champlain and St. Lawrence Railroad inaugurated service between La Prairie and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu in Quebec, marking the birth of steam railroading in Canada. Horse-drawn cars had operated earlier, but this date saw the debut of the locomotive Dorchester, built by Robert Stephenson in England. The 16-mile line connected the St. Lawrence River to Lake Champlain, facilitating trade and passenger travel in a region previously limited by poor roads. Key figures included promoter Jason C. Pierce and engineer Thomas C. Keefer. This pioneering effort overcame challenges like wooden rails and primitive locomotives, setting the stage for Canada's vast rail network and inspiring further expansion during the colonial era.
