June 10, 1891, witnessed the start of pioneering electric locomotive tests on the Prussian state railways near Berlin, using a Siemens & Halske three-phase AC system. Engineer Walter Reichel oversaw trials with a 300-horsepower locomotive reaching speeds of 60 km/h on a test track. This innovation addressed limitations of steam power in urban areas and steep grades, building on earlier streetcar electrification.
