Central Pacific Railroad Milestone

On June 10, 1864, workers on the Central Pacific Railroad achieved a major breakthrough by completing the initial bore through the Sierra Nevada mountains near Cisco, California. This engineering feat involved thousands of Chinese laborers using black powder and hand drills to carve tunnels through granite at elevations over 7,000 feet. Led by chief engineer Samuel S. Montague and under the direction of Leland Stanford, the project faced avalanches, harsh winters, and supply shortages during the Civil War era. The tunnels enabled the eventual linking of the eastern and western United States via the First Transcontinental Railroad in 1869, revolutionizing commerce and westward expansion.
