Inauguration of the Tokaido Line Express

On June 13, 1927, Japanese National Railways introduced the first limited express passenger service on the Tokaido Main Line between Tokyo and Osaka. The new trains, hauled by powerful steam locomotives such as the Class C51, cut travel time to under nine hours and featured improved passenger amenities including dining cars. This service responded to growing demand from business travelers and tourists during Japan's rapid industrialization. The Tokaido Line would later become the route for the world's first high-speed Shinkansen in 1964. The 1927 express marked a milestone in Japanese rail modernization and set standards for long-distance comfort and reliability that influenced postwar rail development.
