Launch of the 20th Century Limited

On June 14, 1902, the New York Central Railroad debuted the 20th Century Limited, an all-Pullman luxury express running between New York City's Grand Central Terminal and Chicago's LaSalle Street Station. Designed for speed and opulence, the train featured mahogany interiors, fine dining, and barber services, averaging 80 km/h over its 1,536 km route. It competed directly with the Pennsylvania Railroad's Broadway Limited and became an icon of the Gilded Age, carrying presidents, celebrities, and industrialists. Engineering highlights included the Water Level Route along the Hudson River, avoiding steep grades. The Limited ran until 1967, influencing rail marketing and passenger expectations worldwide.
