On June 16, 1884, the world’s first purpose-built roller coaster, LaMarcus Adna Thompson’s 'Switchback Railway,' opened to the public at Coney Island, New York. Thompson, often referred to as the 'Father of the Modern Roller Coaster,' built the Switchback Railway to provide a thrilling yet safe entertainment experience. Inspired by the scenic railways of the coal mining regions of Pennsylvania, where gravity-powered cars transported coal down steep inclines, Thompson envisioned a similar concept adapted for amusement. Riders disembarked at the end of the track, and the cars were manually pushed back to the starting point for the next run. Despite its simplicity, the ride was an instant success, attracting huge crowds eager to pay the 5-cent fare for the novel experience.
