First railway line opens in the Netherlands

On June 16, 1842, the Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg-Maatschappij inaugurated the country's first railway, a 16 km line linking Amsterdam to Haarlem. Built amid challenging peat soil conditions, engineers employed innovative wooden pile foundations and wrought-iron rails. British-built steam locomotives hauled the inaugural trains, drawing crowds astonished by speeds reaching 40 km/h. The opening catalyzed Dutch industrialization, facilitated passenger travel between key cities, and set the stage for the national network that evolved into Nederlandse Spoorwegen. It symbolized the Netherlands' entry into the European railway age during a period of economic modernization.
