Tokaido Shinkansen Test Runs Begin

Japanese National Railways began intensive test runs of the 0 Series Shinkansen on June 17, 1964, between Tokyo and Osaka. Designed by Hideo Shima, these trains reached 210 km/h using advanced aerodynamics and distributed traction. The project was part of Japan's post-war economic miracle and prepared the line for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Engineering challenges included earthquake resistance and noise reduction. The Shinkansen revolutionized rail travel globally and set standards for high-speed rail that continue today.
