Reading Railroad Extension Opens

On June 18, 1846, the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad opened its critical extension to Mount Carbon, marking a major step in America's coal-hauling network. This 20-mile addition allowed efficient movement of anthracite from the Schuylkill Valley mines to Philadelphia ports using powerful 4-4-0 locomotives. Engineer Moncure Robinson oversaw construction through challenging terrain. The line boosted the Industrial Revolution by supplying fuel to eastern factories and cities. It later influenced the Reading's dominance in Pennsylvania railroading and set standards for heavy freight operations still studied by modelers today.
