The Transandine Railway reached completion on June 20, 1913, after years of tunneling through the Andes at over 3,000 meters elevation. Using Abt rack systems for steep grades, the line connected Mendoza, Argentina, to Los Andes, Chile, with British-built 0-6-2T rack locomotives. It enabled transcontinental trade and passenger travel, symbolizing engineering triumph amid harsh conditions. Though closed in 1984, sections have been restored for tourism, highlighting early 20th-century international rail cooperation.
