First Electric Multiple Unit in Japan

June 23, 1904 saw the debut of Japan's inaugural electric multiple-unit passenger train on the Kobu Railway between Iidamachi and Nakano. Built with equipment imported from General Electric, the two-car set operated on 600 V DC third-rail power and represented a major technological leap from steam operations. This innovation reduced smoke in urban areas and improved acceleration for frequent commuter services. The success of these units influenced the later electrification of the entire Yamanote Line and other Tokyo-area routes. The event symbolized Japan's rapid modernization and adoption of Western railway technology during the Meiji era, paving the way for extensive suburban electrification across the country.
