On June 24, 1838, the Grand Junction Railway inaugurated its full 82-mile main line, linking Birmingham with the pioneering Liverpool and Manchester Railway at Warrington. Engineered by Joseph Locke with innovative cuttings and viaducts, the route used early steam locomotives like the 2-2-2 Patentee types. This connection formed the backbone of Britain's emerging national network, slashing travel times between industrial heartlands and ports. It spurred economic growth by enabling faster coal and goods transport, while attracting notable passengers including engineers and politicians.
