This connection was vital for Colorado's growth, allowing the territory to tap into the transcontinental railroad completed the following year. The arrival spurred economic booms in mining and agriculture, overcoming challenges of the high plains terrain with standard gauge track and early steam locomotives like the 4-4-0 American types.
