Norway's First Railway Opens

On June 27, 1857, Norway inaugurated its first railway, the 68-kilometer Trunk Line connecting Oslo to Eidsvoll. Engineered by Carl Abraham Pihl, the line overcame rugged terrain with timber trestles and gentle grades suited to early steam locomotives imported from Britain. The opening ceremony drew thousands and symbolized Norway's push toward industrialization and national integration. The railway quickly boosted timber exports and passenger travel between the capital and inland districts. It laid the foundation for the Norwegian State Railways and demonstrated how rail infrastructure could unify a sparsely populated country with challenging geography.
