On June 27, 1895, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) made history with the inaugural run of its prestigious Royal Blue Line passenger service, connecting Washington, D.C., and New York City. This event marked a groundbreaking moment in U.S. railroading, as the Royal Blue became the first American passenger train to employ electric locomotives. The innovation was necessitated by the B&O's route through the Howard Street Tunnel in Baltimore, where steam locomotives created hazardous smoke and fumes in the confined space. To address this issue, the railroad partnered with General Electric to develop an electric locomotive capable of efficiently pulling passenger trains through the tunnel.
The electric locomotive used for the Royal Blue's debut was a GE-designed unit, modest in size but revolutionary in concept. While the electric traction was only utilized for the short stretch through the tunnel, it represented a significant leap forward in the application of electric power to railroads. Once clear of the tunnel, a traditional steam locomotive resumed hauling the train for the remainder of the journey. The Royal Blue itself was a marvel of luxury and modernity, featuring opulent Pullman cars, fine dining, and a smooth, fast ride. Targeted at affluent travelers, the service was part of the B&O's strategy to compete with the Pennsylvania Railroad for dominance in the lucrative New York-to-Washington corridor.
The Royal Blue’s debut cemented the B&O's reputation as an innovator in passenger services, and its partial electrification presaged the broader adoption of electric traction in the early 20th century. The train remained a symbol of elegance and technological progress for decades, though electric operation did not immediately expand beyond its initial application in Baltimore. Nonetheless, this event marked the beginning of a slow but inexorable shift toward cleaner, more efficient rail propulsion systems, which would ultimately transform rail transportation worldwide.
