After seven years of construction, the Simplon Tunnel opened to traffic on June 27, 1907. At 19.8 km it was the longest railway tunnel in the world, connecting Brig, Switzerland, with Iselle, Italy. Engineers used innovative ventilation and water-drainage systems to conquer extreme heat and pressure at depth. The tunnel slashed travel time between northern Europe and Milan, strengthening trade and tourism. It remains a vital artery for freight and passenger services, later supplemented by a parallel bore completed in 1922.
