Canadian Pacific Railway Reaches Calgary

On June 29, 1883, the Canadian Pacific Railway's construction crews reached Calgary, Alberta, as part of the ambitious transcontinental project chartered in 1881. Led by William Cornelius Van Horne, the line used 4-4-0 locomotives to navigate the prairies and Rockies. This arrival transformed a small Mounted Police outpost into a booming rail hub, enabling grain exports and immigration. It connected eastern Canada to the Pacific, fulfilling national confederation goals and overcoming engineering feats like mountain tunnels.
