Canadian Pacific Surveys Completed

June 29, 1883, saw the completion of critical surveying work for the Canadian Pacific Railway's mountain section. Led by chief engineer Sandford Fleming, teams mapped routes through the Selkirk Mountains, facing avalanches and harsh weather. This milestone enabled construction of the iconic Spiral Tunnels later. The surveys connected eastern Canada to the Pacific, fulfilling Confederation promises and boosting national unity. Notable for using theodolites and early photography, the effort overcame immense logistical hurdles, paving the way for the 1885 driving of the last spike and transforming Canada's economy through resource transport.
