Victoria Bridge opens in Montreal

On June 29, 1858, the Victoria Bridge, engineered by Robert Stephenson, officially opened as a key component of the Grand Trunk Railway network. This 1.9-kilometer tubular iron bridge was the longest of its kind worldwide and overcame immense engineering challenges including ice flows and deep water. The opening ceremony featured the Prince of Wales and symbolized Canada's growing integration into continental trade routes.
