On July 2, 1900, the Perm to Yekaterinburg section of the Trans-Siberian Railway commenced operations. This 300-mile stretch overcame harsh terrain and harsh winters using steam locomotives like the Class O. Overseen by Minister Sergei Witte, it formed part of the ambitious 5,772-mile route to Vladivostok. The opening boosted Siberian resource transport and military mobility, playing a role in the Russo-Japanese War logistics. It remains one of history's greatest engineering feats.
