Liverpool Overhead Railway Extension Opened

The Liverpool Overhead Railway, the world's first electric elevated line, opened its Dingle extension on July 2, 1893. This innovative 6-mile system used third-rail electrification and served the busy Port of Liverpool with 14 stations. Engineer Charles Aldridge designed it to avoid street congestion. It carried millions of passengers annually until 1956 and influenced urban rail planning worldwide, including early subway concepts. The line demonstrated reliable electric traction for high-density freight and passenger service.
