The Compagnie du chemin de fer métropolitain de Paris opened Line 1 on July 2, 1900, just in time for the Exposition Universelle. Designed by Fulgence Bienvenüe with elegant Art Nouveau entrances by Hector Guimard, the 8-mile underground route revolutionized urban mobility in the French capital. It set the standard for modern subway systems worldwide and remains one of the busiest lines in the Paris network today.
