First Electric Streetcar Line Opens

On July 2, 1883, the East Cleveland Street Railway inaugurated the world's first commercially successful electric streetcar line using overhead trolley wires designed by inventor Frank J. Sprague. This 2-mile route replaced horse-drawn cars, offering cleaner, faster, and more reliable service that transformed urban mobility. The technology quickly spread to cities worldwide, enabling suburban growth and reducing reliance on animal power.
